A new pilgrimage site is set to rise at the exact area of the first Catholic Mass in the Philippines, in line with the celebration of 500 years of Christianity in the Philippines.

WITH the celebration of the 500th anniversary of Christianity in the Philippines fast approaching, the Diocese of Maasin in Southern Leyte is seeking financial and moral assistance to finish the construction of a planned pilgrimage site in Limasawa Island at the fastest possible time.

The seven-story complex, to be called "Shrine and Pilgrim Center with a Tower of Light," will be located at the island where the first Catholic Mass in the country took place in 1521.

Construction has already started last February and is targeted to be finished before the end of the local celebration on March of 2022.

The launching of the local celebration would be on March 31 to commemorate the first Easter Mass on the island which took place on that very same day, which overwhelms a lot of devotees as it "gives them goosebumps" to be able to celebrate such momentous occasion.

Bishop Precioso Cantillas has appealed for the people’s generosity to help with the faster completion of the shrine.

“I invite you to give thanks to God for the gift of faith we all have received by donating an amount or construction materials,” Cantillas said on a post at the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website. (JKA)
