With Leyte province still under a modified general community quarantine, the provincial government is optimistic on the province’s chances of recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic as business activities and flow of products remain less restricted.

MORE investments are expected as the province of Leyte maintains the modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) status for the entire month of May, a report from the office of the governor said.

Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla in an interview said he is optimistic that maintaining the MGCQ status, which is the less stringent quarantine measures will encourage more investors to invest their capital in the province.

He claimed that sustaining MGCQ for the past months allowed the unhampered delivery of goods and services to the public, particularly agricultural products to the market or consumers.

The governor added that the mechanisms that had been put in place by the local government authorities will ensure that economic activities will not be hampered in the continuing fight against Covid-19.

According to Petilla, the business establishments in the province have continued with their unrestricted operations on conditions that they will comply with the requirements as stipulated in the health protocols.

“The MGCQ status allows the unhampered production and delivery of goods and services to the public. There is a free flow of agricultural products from the production areas to the market thereby sustaining the food supply for the consumers."

Leyte was not included in the areas placed under the general community quarantine (GCQ) classification as recently announced by President Rodrigo Duterte.

However, the governor clarified that the MGCQ status “may be shortened or extended depending upon the recommendation of the Provincial Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), without prejudice to declaration of localized enhanced community quarantine in some areas.”

He added that the protocols implemented under MGCQ for the past nine months will continue to be in effect for this month of May.
