At least 282 former Communist rebels and their supporters in Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar have taken their oath of allegiance to the government after surrendering last August 27.

TWO weeks after a bloody encounter between government forces and alleged members of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) in Silvino Lobos, Northern Samar, authorities today reported a decisive victory in the government’s anti-Communist insurgency campaign in the area.

A total of 282 members of the NPA, along with their supporters, surrendered to government officials in this town last August 27, according to a report by the Municipal Task Force-Ending Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-ELCAC).

Among the surrenderers include 65 members of the Batakang Organisasyon ng Pampartido (BOP), 65 members of the Milisyang Bayan (MB) and 152 members of Legal na Organisadong Masa (LOM), coming from 11 barangays of the town.

All former Communist rebels have taken their oath of allegiance to the government, the municipal NTF-ELCAC also reported.

The town of Silvino Lobos, one of the most isolated areas in Northern Samar, has been the site of intensified government action against the remnants of Communist insurgency in the province.

Last August 19, a policeman and a suspected NPA member were killed in an encounter between the 805th Regional Mobile Force Brigade and 10 communist rebels in Barangay Geparayan de Turag.
