Reports we’re getting from the Department of Health EV CHD Health Promotion reveals a rather alarming trend. Last May 28, the region posted 186 new COVID cases – the highest number for this year, according to DOH.

This increase of new cases would not have mattered if the COVID fatality rate had remained significantly small. But the health department has particularly expressed worry after it observed what it described as an alarming increase in the number of deaths caused by the disease. However, except for noting an increase of COVID deaths during the months of January to May this year, it was not clear how much significant leap in percentage was observed.

Another concern that should get our attention is the noticeable rise of local transmission incidents. According to DOH, there are as of date 71 COVID hotspot barangays in the region. These are communities with 3 or more recorded active cases. The good thing, for now, is that the local IATF in these areas is able to trace, identify and contain these cases. Hopefully, LGUs will remain in control of the situation. The public’s mindfulness about the obtaining disease and their continued observance of health protocols will matter a lot.

The health agency attributed the increase of COVID cases to the relaxed and eased movements of the public. Obviously, the public is now enjoying the reduced travel restrictions. The problem is that they tend to become more and more complacent to the minimum health and safety protocols. If the complacency persists, hopefully not, far would still be the day that we would see the eventual culmination of the last COVID cases.

Our collective action today has a lot to do tomorrow. You can expect a COVID-free locality if most of us, if not all, will be seriously mindful of our responsibility in maintaining disease-free communities. While it feels already tedious and dull doing all these health protocols – wearing of face masks, face shields, social distancing, and frequent hand washing, and we have been stuck on these restrictions for over a year now, will save us a lot of lives, including maybe your own.

So buckle up still and remain steadfast in this fight we have against the disease COVID.#
