Senator Estrada filed a resolution seeking an investigation into the cholera outbreak in Philippine regions to help mitigate the infection.

Senator Jose E. Estrada filed Senate Resolution 266 to investigate in aid of legislation, the cholera outbreak in several regions of the country.

Data from the Department of Health (DoH) showed that cholera cases have almost quadrupled to 3,729 from January to October a year earlier.

“At least 33 individuals have already died from the disease this year and children aged five to nine were most affected by cholera.” Business World quoted Estrada.

The situation calls for a review of the existing policies to prevent and mitigate the outbreak of the disease.

DoH added that Central Luzon, Western and Eastern Visayas have exceeded the cholera epidemic threshold levels in the last ten months.

Cholera is a severe diarrheal infection caused by some strains of the bacterium Vibrio cholerae in the small intestine. It spreads through the consumption of contaminated water and food that are contaminated with bacteria from human feces.

Because of this, there is a need to protect the public, especially the children and underprivileged against this illness through a coordinated approach from government agencies.

“The existing policies and programs on sanitation and immunization must be reviewed in order to enhance emergency response mechanisms and preventive measures against the transmission of the disease and to promote public health,” Estrada added.

He cited a report from the Global Task Force on Cholera Control which showed that providing clean water, sanitation, hygiene services, and oral cholera vaccines would help prevent cholera deaths.
