Ensuring structural integrity should be the first step in disaster preparedness.
This is especially important in San Pedro City, Laguna, due to its proximity to the West Valley Fault system that starts in Marikina City and extends all the way to Calamba City, Laguna.
Taking advantage of the recent suspension of classes imposed by the provincial government of Laguna until October 31, the city government of San Pedro immediately conducted an infrastructure audit of its public structures, particularly school buildings.
The audit was spearheaded by local city departments including the San Pedro City Engineering Office, City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), Schools Divisions Office, City Planning and Development Coordinator's Office (CPDCO), City Tourism, Culture and Arts Office (CTCAO), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP), Office of the Building Official (OBO), and the City Administrator's Office.
According to a social media post, the audit is also in line with Memorandum Circular No. 2025-071 issued by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) last July, ordering all LGUs to conduct infrastructure audits in public buildings to ensure their structural integrity in case of calamities such as earthquakes.
Mayor Art Mercado, who attended the last day of auditing on October 28 – coincidentally, the same day when four minor tremors were felt in Laguna province – assured San Pedrenses that the city government will immediately act on the recommendations made by the LGU, based on the results of the findings of the audit.
“Sisiguraduhin natin na gagawan natin ng aksyon ang magiging rekomendasyon ng ating team,” the city mayor added.
Meanwhile, residents and business establishments, particularly those that are situated near fault lines, are also encouraged to have their structures checked for integrity.
Residential owners are encouraged to utilize the “How Safe is My House” tool developed by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
This self-assessment tool helps homeowners evaluate the structural safety of their houses against earthquakes and other hazards.
All barangays in the city are also enjoined to promote the use of this tool in residential areas within their jurisdiction to ensure community-wide awareness and resilience.
“The City Government of San Pedro remains steadfast in its efforts to implement national policies that enhance infrastructure safety, protect lives and property, and ensure the city’s continuous growth and resilience,” the LGU affirmed in its social media page.
