Taal Volcano activity raised to Alert Level 3 but is not yet dangerous enough to cancel flights. Affected planes will avoid the island as a safety precaution.

Flag carrier Philippine Airlines, in an advisory, said it was not canceling any flights despite an Alert Level 3 raised by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) from the eruption of Taal Volcano today.

But it said all affected flights will avoid flying over Taal Volcano island as airborne ash and fragments may pose hazards to aircraft, the PAL statement said adding it will continue to monitor developments.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised the status of Taal Volcano to Alert Level 3 after a phreatomagmatic eruption on Saturday morning.

A phreatomagmatic eruption is when hot magma comes into contact with groundwater.

“Kaninang ika-7:22 ng umaga, nagkaroon ng panandaliang phreatomagmatic burst sa Taal Volcano Main Crater na nasundan ng halos tuloy-tuloy na phreatomagmatic na pagputok na lumikha ng plume,” the advisory reads.

The volcanic status Alert Level 3 means a “magmatic intrusion at the main crater that may further drive succeeding eruptions.”

The agency has been monitoring the volcano after a “small” phreatomagmatic burst was recorded on the morning of Friday, March 25.

Thankfully, Phivolcs director Renato Solidum said the recent eruptions are not as strong as those recorded in January 2020.

Authorities are currently evacuating people living in lakeside communities near Taal.

Taal Volcano’s most recent phreatomagmatic eruption was in January 2020 which grounded dozens of flights over heavy ashfall.
