San Miguel Corporation top man Ramon S. Ang says the newly-opened Skyway extension in Muntinlupa City will solve the problem of traffic jams at the South Luzon Expressway while also cutting travel time by 25 to 30 minutes.

The four-kilometer Skyway South Extension project bypasses the Alabang Viaduct in Muntinlupa City and is seen as a solution to the problem of traffic jams at the northbound portion of the expressway

THE usual almost daily heavy traffic at the northbound lane of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEx) at the Alabang Viaduct will soon be a thing of the past.

This, as toll operator San Miguel Corporation (SMC) said the opening of the northbound section of its Skyway Extension Project, connecting the current Skyway network with Susana Heights in Muntinlupa City, will greatly help to ease the flow of traffic in the area.

In a statement, SMC President and COO Ramon Ang said two of the three lanes of the Skyway extension, which runs from Susana Heights to the Skyway Toll Plaza in Sucat, Paranaque City, has been opened to the public starting last Sunday (April 11).

“I am proud to announce to motorists from the south that finally, our long-awaited Skyway Extension northbound section is finally open. Our long-term solution to addressing traffic particularly on SLEX heading to the Alabang area has finally been realized,” Ang reported.

“This would not have been possible without the support of our government, led by President Duterte and the ‘Build Build Build’ team, who have helped us in so many ways to complete this project,” he added.

For now, only Class 1 vehicles (cars, jeepneys and vans) can use the new Skyway, while collection of toll fees is suspended "until further notice."

The four-kilometer Skyway South Extension project bypasses the Alabang Viaduct in Muntinlupa City and is seen as a solution to the problem of traffic jams at the northbound portion of the expressway.

Completion was originally scheduled last December 2020 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and an accident involving a girder which fell down the East Service Road last November, killing a motorist and injuring four others.

With the new extension now complete, Ang says the extended Skyway network will cut travel time from SLEX to the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) to just 25 to 30 minutes from the usual two to three hours. (ONT)
