The proposed toll road connecting Quezon to Bicol will enhance access to RORO ports and fish ports, boost the tourism industry in the surrounding areas and provide a faster route.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade and San Miguel Corporation President and CEO Ramon Ang have just signed the Supplemental Toll Operations Agreement (STOA) for the TR5 section of the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX-TR5).

The SLEX-TR5 is a 417-kilometer expressway that connects Quezon and Bicol provinces. It would be a 4-lane divided toll road that will run from the South Luzon Expressway Toll Road 4 (SLEX TR4) Project's terminus point in Barangay Mayao, Lucena City to Matnog, Sorsogon.

The following is a list of the eight segments that make up the SLEX TR5:

Segment I: Lucena to Gumaca, Quezon, 59.6 km

Segment II: Gumaca to Tagkawayan, Quezon, 62.4 km

Segment III Tagkawayan to Sipocot, Camarines Sur, 59.0 km

Segment IV: Sipocot to Naga City, Camarines Sur, 35.4 km

Segment V: Naga City to Polangui, Albay, 48.0 km

Segment VI: Polangui to Legazpi City, Albay, 35.0 km

Segment VII: Legaspi to Sorsogon City, Sorsogon, 54.3 km

Segment VIII: Sorsogon City to Matnog, Sorsogon, 62.78 km

The proposed highway in the southern portion of Luzon will help enhance access to RORO (roll-on, roll-off) ports and fish ports, as well as the tourism industry in the surrounding areas, apart from offering a faster route.

As a result, traffic congestion in Bicol will be reduced.

The Luzon Spine Expressway (LSEN) Program includes the SLEX TR5 as one of the expressways. With its extensive expressway network, it hopes to shorten travel time between Ilocos and Bicol from 20 to nine hours.

Furthermore, the program has the potential to lower the number of motorists that use national highways for safer travel.

PNR Bicol project ok'd

Apart from car travel, the DOTr has approved the development of the PNR Bicol project. With its regular and rapid trains, this project would provide rail transportation between Manila and the Bicol region.

It will run concurrently with the Philippine National Railways (PNR) network, which would serve northern Luzon, including Bulacan and Clark.
