The DOLE was asked to encourage employers to hire capable seniors and disabled which makes good business sense.

Hiring of seniors and disabled that are still capable of working and being productive should be encouraged by the government.

This after Rep. Rodolfo Ordanes pleasantly noted the ads of Kentucky Fried Chicken in posting for jobs for seniors in select places of their stores namely Quezon City, Pasay, Taguig and Makati.

Ordanes said hiring seniors gives them equal opportunity mindset that is good for business.

Able senior citizens can join the workforce because of welcoming employers like Kentucky Fried Chicken Philippines which see the Anti-Age Discrimination Law (Republic Act 10911) as good for business and the communities they serve, according to the Senior Citizen Party-list.

Ordanes formally wrote to the KFC General Manager Maria Judith Marcelo to express his appreciation for opening job applications to seniors in some of their branches.

In an announcement graphic, KFC said senior citizens may apply for vacancies in select branches in Quezon City, Pasay City, Taguig City, and Makati City.

The vacancies are for part-time positions. Nevertheless it gives them time to productively use their talents and skills.

Other employers in the restaurant industry like Jollibee and McDonalds have also hired seniors.

In job hunting websites and portals, there are retail businesses and callcenters which explicitly disclose vacancies for seniors, as well as persons with disabilities.

Equal opportunity

Ordanes asked the Department of Labor and Employment to encourage more employers to adopt the "equal opportunity" mindset in their hiring and personnel policies and practices.

“Equal opportunity is the nondiscrimination concept underpinning the law. Discrimination biases based on age, gender, gender identity, ethnic heritage, and religion must have no place in our open society,” Ordanes said.

“For example, there should be no reason a secretary should be young andfemale. Many seniors are good examples of pleasant or pleasing personality. Pleasant personality should not be a code word for beautiful or sexy. Many seniors are sterling examples not just of ageless beauty or handsomeness, but also of wisdom and courtesy,” Ordanes pointed out.
