PNVF has replaced Dante Alinsunurin as the men’s national team’s head coach due to commitment issues brought by conflicting schedules.

The Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) seems to have reached a decision to remove the head coach, Dante Alinsunurin, after being named as Choco Mucho’s coach in the upcoming Premier Volleyball League All-Filipino Conference.

While attending the press conference for the All-Filipino Cup on Saturday, January 28 at the Discovery Suites, Alinsunurin revealed that he will no longer handle the Philippine men’s national volleyball team (PMNVT) after taking over the team in 2019 and steering it to a historic silver medal finish in the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila.

“Parang ang nangyari is syempre nagsabi ako sa kanila na maghahandle na ako ng women’s (Choco Mucho) then yun nga tinanong nila ako kung kakayanin ko daw. Ayun nga, sabi nila baka ma-busy ako at hindi ko ma-handle, kinausap ako nung team manager na yun ang sitwasyon na napagusapan nila na ibaba nila ako or hindi na ako yung maging head coach ng men’s [national team],” Alinsunurin said to the press as reported by Tiebreaker Times.

However, he insisted that he will be able to juggle his time between the Flying Titans and the national team but he only got questioned by the team manager about his commitment, almost everyday, until the PNVF revealed that they are letting him go.

“Kaya lang ayun medyo nag-decide na rin sila, yung PNVF, na palitan na rin siguro ako although wala pa akong narereceive na letter na wala na ako sa national team basta more on team manager lang kausap ko,” he added.

National Teams Commission chairman Tonyboy Liao confirmed the development and claimed that the board agreed to let go of Alinsunurin due to his schedule with the UAAP and PVL All-Filipino, reported Sports Inquirer.

“That decision was approved by the board. The reason he was replaced was that [PNVF president] Tats Suzara asked Rolly Delfino of Choco Mucho and he said [Alinsunurin] is a full-time coach at Choco Mucho, the same with the NU men’s team,” Liao said. “So they were asking how will he give his time to the national men’s team while the PVL and UAAP are ongoing. How will he go to Cambodia? So that was the decision.”

Alinsunurin will be replaced by UST head coach Odjie Mamon as an interim head coach as the team will be preparing for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games this May, said Rappler.

The permanent coaching duties will then be given to Brazilian Sergio Veloso who will be calling the shots following the SEA Games heading towards the Asian Games scheduled in September.
