Want a real horror story this coming Halloween?

Here’s one: it was recently revealed that as of October this year, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed just 22 of the 1,700 targeted classrooms for our public schools.

This is just the latest in the ongoing horror series called corruption.

And we can be sure that more horror stories are bound to be unveiled as the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) and concerned citizens continue to probe through the maze of massive, uncontrolled greed among our government officials.

Ghost projects, ghost deliveries, ghost contracts – all these serve to haunt ordinary Filipinos who are tired of sub-par government services, a sinking economy, and the everyday struggles of just trying to eke out their measly salaries day after day.

And unlike the usual horror stories of mangkukulams and white ladies along Balete Drive, the impacts of these ghost projects are real and tangible.

The impacts: Delayed progress, unfulfilled dreams of our youth, entire generations held back and trapped into a system that benefits only the pockets of a few.

Perhaps, now is the time to ask our public officials who have proven to pocket millions at the expense of ordinary Filipinos: don’t you ever get nightmares at the thought of being virtual “vampires” who suck dry our country’s coffers?
