San Pedro City farmers are grateful for the assistance they received from the Department of Agriculture which they can use in ensuring food accessibility by promoting urban farming and innovative agricultural practices.

THE Department of Agriculture IV-CALABARZON (DA-4A) turned-over a total of P2,927,095 worth of urban agriculture assistance to urban farmers in San Pedro City, Laguna last June 4.

DA-4A OIC-Regional Executive Director Vilma M. Dimaculungan led the delivery of assistance that include greenhouse with hydroponics technology, mushroom house and garden toolsand equipment.

Also handed out were assorted seeds and seedlings for three communal gardens, and quail production modules that would benefit at least three barangays in the city.

Beneficiaries include San Pedro Agri-Workers Network (SPAWN); Pacita Organic Garden; Samahang Mangingisda ng San Roque; and Pacita Complex Homeowners Association (PCHAI) Phase 6.

The new equipment will help ensure food accessibility and availability by growing food in highly urbanized locality, like the city of San Pedro, and promote urban farming and innovative agricultural practices.

San Pedro Agri Workers Network officer Manuel Belen, one the farmer-beneficiaries was grateful and appreciative of the support.

“Napakalaking tulong po ng mga bigay ng DA-4A sa aming samahan, lalo’t higit yung multi-tiller, dahil mapapadali ang aming trabaho, at mas marami pang gulay ang puwede naming maitanim,” Belen said.

San Pedro City has been actively pursuing a program of urban agriculture, where open spaces and vacant lots in the city were converted into garden plots so that residents can plant fruit-bearing trees and vegetables.

According to Mayor Lourdes Cataquiz, urban agriculture will ensure food supply stability in the city during the time of the Covid-19 pandemic. (ONT/with report from PIA)
