Even as we celebrated New Year’s Eve with a semblance of the revelry that we had missed in 2021, two major events kept reminding us that there are still major health concerns coming our way.

For one: cases of Covid-19 once again spiked up to the thousand level on December 31, just a week after majority of cities and municipalities in Laguna province have breathed a sigh of relief after declaring themselves Covid-19 free.

Two: the Department of Health (DOH) has said there is now a “high possibility” that the more contagious Omicron variant of Covid-19 is now being transmitted locally.

Many health experts now worry that the revelries of New Year might soon be followed by yet another surge in Covid-19 cases.

This, in fact, has prompted the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) to place Metro Manila under Alert Level 3 from January 3 to 15, while there is yet no word on whether this will be extended to other provinces including Laguna.

One faint ray of light in this new development is that, according to an increasing number of studies in other countries, the Omicron variant is "less severe" than the Delta variant.

But the main point here is, have we once again forgotten the basic lessons that 2021 has taught us - that we should never relax our guard especially with such an unpredictable virus?

The fact that many Filipinos are now undergoing "quarantine fatigue" due to the endless cycle of lockdowns and restrictions is understandable - but have we not realized that the best way to break that cycle is, once again, strictly adhering to health protocols?
