Instead of asking for gifts, centenarian Diego Veluz in a display of altruism decided to give to others in need on his 101st birthday, using his own pension money to buy 20 sacks of rice, chocolates, and bread to give out to others.

A birthday is usually the time for receiving gifts. But a centenarian in Luisiana, Laguna recently decided to instead use the occasion of his birthday to help others in need.

Diego Veluz decided to give to others in need on his 101st birthday, using his own pension money to buy 20 sacks of rice, chocolates, and bread to give out to others.

It turns out, however, that generosity is nothing new to the centenarian, who said he wanted to celebrate his birthday by sharing his blessings.

"I'm very happy because I know that the Lord is the one blessing me so I should share it to others," Veluz told media.

Veluz used to work as a farmer until he was allowed to join his family in the United States.

When he returned to the Philippines at the age of 90, one of the first things he did was to help- with the construction of the Luisiana Adventist Elementary School out of his own savings.

He also helped students at the school finish their studies through his own scholarship program.

"Mula nang maliit ako hanggang sa ako'y lumaki at nakatapos ng pag-aaral, tuloy-tuloy po ang kanyang pagtulong," said school principal Wyeth Apejas.
"Tunay na ipinakilala niya po sa amin ang Panginoon sa pamamagitan po ng [kanyang] buhay. Maraming salamat po," she added.
