Pinoy pop group SB19 has been nominated for the “Top Social Artist” category in the Billboard Music Awards (BBMA), going up against international superstars including K Pop groups Blackpink, BTS and Seventeen.

Pinoy pop royalty group SB19 made history as the first Filipino and Southeast Asian group to be nominated in the prestigious Billboard Music Awards (BBMA).

Filipino-American influencer Bretman Rock made the announcement last Friday (April 30).

SB19 is nominated for the “Top Social Artist”, one of the three fan-voted categories in the award show, going up against international superstars including K Pop groups Blackpink, BTS and Seventeen, together with American pop star Ariana Grande.

BTS has dominated the Top Social Artist award for the past four years after dethroning Canadian pop superstar Justin Bieber who won the award consistently from 2011-2016.

This nomination also marks the first for both Blackpink and Seventeen.

The group consists of Josh, Pablo (formerly known as Sejun), Stell, Ken, and Justin trained by ShowBT Philippines, under the management of ShowBT Group in Korea, since 2016.

SB19 took to Twitter the historic nomination in which they expressed their gratitude to the unending support of their fans.

"WE MADE IT, A'TIN! We are so grateful for your love and support. We wouldn't have come this far without all of you. A'TIN 'TO! Iwawagayway ang WATAWAT," they wrote.

In return, the fans celebrated the group’s nomination with the hashtag “#SB19forBBMAs” that reached as high as the third-top trending topic on local Twitter.

Just a day before the announcement, the group was making noise on social media as “#SB19onUnangHirit” was the #1 trending topic in the Philippines early Thursday morning, after the P-pop boy band delivered their first-ever televised performance of “What?”, their comeback single which was released on March 9 with other 8 million views garnered as of today.

The 2021 Billboard Music Awards will be live on May 23, 8 p.m. ET (8 a.m. on May 24 in the Philippines) at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. (NP)
