While yesterday (December 1), Taal Volcano did not seem to manifest any volcanic movement in the province of Batangas, the Philippine Institute of Seismology and Volcanology’s monitoring network recorded four low-grade earthquakes since 4:45 am of Tuesday. (Photo by Philippine News Agency.)

Ranging from magnitude 2 to 2.6, these movements were felt in the areas of Mabini at 4:45 am, and in Calatagan at 8:20 a.m. and 7:01 pm yesterday, and 12:11 this morning. These were describes as volcanic movements.

Even with this, Phivolcs did not raise the warning level and maintained it at Alert Level 1. This means the volcano is in an abnormal situation.

Phivolcs, however, reminds the public to be observant of sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas that could occur and threaten areas within the Taal Volcano Island (TVI).

Since the January 12 eruption, the TVI had been tagged as a permanent danger zone. Entry to the island, specifically on the vicinities of the main crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, remains strictly prohibited.

Continuous assessment of damage and new manifestations like fissures, sinkholes and rising of lake water level in previously evacuated barangays around the Taal Lake are being done by local government units.

LGUs have strengthened preparedness, contingency and communication measures in case of renewed unrest.

Residents in the area are on the alert.

  1. Civil aviation authorities must advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from sudden explosions and wind-remobilized ash may pose hazards to aircraft
