VCO as COVID-19 Treatment? DOST looking for more research participants

2 min read

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is now looking for more participants in a community-based study on the effectiveness of virgin coconut oil (VCO) in treating COVID-19.

The agency is currently doing a study on the efficacy of VCO for COVID-19 patients at the Santa Rosa Community Hospital in Laguna.

During a recent “Laging Handa” public briefing, Science and Technology Secretary Fortunato dela Peña said most of the participants in this study, who exhibited mild symptoms, were already sent home.

Dela Peña did not specify how many were the human subjects in the study and the number of those who recovered.

28 Days

Earlier, DOST said it is targeting 90 participants for the project.

“We want to add the number of participants. For 28 days, VCO will be included in their three meals,” Dela Peña said during the briefing.

On Tuesday, he said half of them would be provided with VCO, to compare the performance with the other 45 persons who would not be given the VCO.

Participants should give their consent. Those who will be provided with VCO should be those whose cholesterol level is not high, Dela Peña added.

Hospital Based

The DOST also planned to do a hospital-based clinical trial to assess the possible benefits of VCO if given to patients with moderate to severe Covid-19.

Recent local studies assessing the use of VCO in preventing COVID-19 had yielded “very promising” results, according to researchers.

In one study, 45 out of 69 residents in Cebu who were given VCO tested negative, while 24 did not develop worse symptoms.
