In all candor, I find the following lines from the FB post of Fr. Ranhilio Aquino, Dean of the Graduate School of Law, San Beda University, succinctly forthright and spot on:

In this column about a week ago, I tackled on “Stoicism and coming to terms with fear.” In said piece, I expressed my affirmative leaning for Stoicism’s philosophy of fear, demonstrating that as fear is rooted on ignorance, the Stoics’ prescription with coming to terms with fear is quite appealing: to face it, know it, and prepare for it.

I bet, like me, you’ve been enamored too by the age-old advice, “Work harder and you’ll succeed.” But a closer look at this success mantra sent me queasily pondering and realizing that “working harder isn’t actually the be-all and end-all of success”.
Rather, the more holistic approach to success is “working smarter”, not harder.

Success or happiness is stepping off the hamster wheel

Yes, happiness is a choice, and it largely depends on ourselves. It starts with you, in you, and by you. With you, because other than craving or pining for grand goals or achievements, happiness is just around with you – the little and priceless blessings you have, and the significant people you have.

We, humans, have always wrestled on the perennial mystery of HAPPINESS. Mystery, because in as much as it is given that happiness is commonly understood as “the state of well-being, joy, or satisfaction,” it is invariably problematic to capture its empirical plausibility, being clothed in subjective sources, outcomes, and their gradations – i.e. wealth, health, professional success, achievements, better social relationships, etc.

Back in my college seminary days of philosophy studies, the ancient Greek philosophy of Stoicism made a lesser appeal to me than the modern philosophy of Existentialism (“existence precedes essence”).
